Hannah Epstein combines textiles and digital media to create characters, immersive environments, and stories that explore contemporary desires and anxieties through a folkloric lens. In Plato’s Goon Cave, she stages a slippery allegory of epistemic uncertainty in a media-saturated present.

CANVASSING CANADIANS

Canvassing Canadians is a CBC Arts digital series created and hosted by Hannah Epstein (Hanski) that travels across the country asking one deceptively simple question: What is Canadian art?

Blending street interviews, performance, and sharp cultural commentary, the project transforms sidewalks, festivals, and public spaces into impromptu studios. Strangers become critics. Passersby become philosophers. The camera captures the awkwardness, humour, contradictions, and surprising sincerity that surface when everyday Canadians are invited to define creativity, identity, and value in real time.

Within the colorful, maniacal aesthetic of artist Hannah Epstein resides a conscious blurring of the lines between formal sophistication and pure ridiculousness — an artistic practice of subverted norms and deconstructed traditions. With an unapologetic embrace of the domestic tradition of textiles, Epstein speaks in a language composed of trashy cartoons and folksy narratives — humorous, absurd, and sometimes disconcerting, her work transfigures universal meaning from an endless sea of post-internet digital culture, producing an oddly original modern-day folklore.
